When you specifically need a doctor’s certificate
If your workplace or another organisation asks for a doctor-issued document, clarify the requirement before paying for an assessment. A pharmacist-issued certificate should not be described as a doctor’s certificate.
Book with a GP or a provider that clearly identifies the assessing professional as a medical practitioner. Explain the purpose of the document and the dates involved. The practitioner decides what they can assess and whether a certificate is appropriate.
Before you book
- Confirm who will carry out the assessment and issue the document.
- Ask whether the service covers the required dates and purpose.
- Check the consultation fee, process and expected response time.
- Have any instructions from your workplace ready to discuss.
If you also need advice about ongoing symptoms or treatment, tell the provider when booking. A request for paperwork is not a substitute for the care you need.
Could a pharmacist assessment meet your needs?
If you need evidence for today’s absence from work, and pharmacist-issued evidence meets your workplace’s requirements, our online medical certificate service may be an option. The assessment costs $12.99 AUD, with a one-day certificate emailed if approved. Payment does not guarantee approval.
It is available for eligible adults who live and work in Australia, for sick leave or carer’s leave. It does not provide backdated, future-dated or multi-day certificates.
