Doctor’s Certificate Online: Do You Need a Doctor or a Pharmacist?
Before booking an online certificate service, check who will assess you and what evidence your workplace needs. A pharmacist-issued absence-from-work certificate is different from a doctor’s certificate.

What is a doctor’s certificate?
A doctor’s certificate is issued by a medical practitioner following an assessment. People sometimes use “doctor’s certificate”, “sick note” and “medical certificate” to mean the same thing, but the professional issuing the document matters.
MyMedicalCert currently provides pharmacist assessments, not doctor consultations or doctor-issued certificates. If you specifically need a doctor’s certificate, book with a GP or a service that clearly identifies its assessing practitioner as a doctor.
For a broader explanation of the different providers, see who can write a medical certificate in Australia.

Can you get a doctor’s certificate online?
A doctor may issue a certificate after a suitable telehealth assessment. Whether remote care is appropriate, and whether a certificate can be issued, depends on the circumstances and the doctor’s judgement. Booking or paying for a consultation does not mean the doctor must issue one.
The Medical Board’s telehealth guidance explains the professional expectations for remote consultations. When comparing services, look beyond the phrase “online medical certificate” and check the provider type, consultation process and service limits.
Before paying, ask:
- Will a doctor or a pharmacist assess my request?
- Does the service cover the purpose and dates I need?
- What does the fee include, and what happens if a certificate is not issued?
- How will I receive the outcome, and how can I contact support?
When might a pharmacist-issued certificate suit your needs?
If you need evidence for a short absence from work, a pharmacist assessment may be an option. The Pharmacy Guild describes absence-from-work certificate services offered by participating pharmacies. Availability and assessment fees vary between providers.
Confirm your workplace’s evidence requirements before choosing a service. If the request specifically says “doctor-issued”, clarify this with your employer rather than assuming any certificate will meet it. Our pharmacy certificate guide includes questions to ask before visiting a local pharmacy.

What does MyMedicalCert offer?
Our online medical certificate service offers an assessment by a registered pharmacist for $12.99 AUD. It covers today’s absence only, with a one-day certificate emailed if approved. The fee is for assessment; approval is not guaranteed.
You can request an assessment for sick leave or carer’s leave. Applicants must be adults who live and work in Australia and meet the application’s eligibility criteria.
The current service does not offer doctor-issued, backdated, future-dated or multi-day certificates. If you need one of those, check the scope of another appropriate provider before booking. For ongoing symptoms or a need for medical care, arrange a GP assessment rather than relying on a certificate request.
Will my workplace accept an online certificate?
The word “online” alone does not answer that question. The issuer, the evidence provided and the circumstances all matter. Fair Work’s guidance says evidence must satisfy a reasonable person that the employee was entitled to the leave; an award or registered agreement can specify evidence requirements.
Ask your workplace which evidence it needs. Employers can request verification of a MyMedicalCert certificate, which is separate from obtaining further clinical information.
