Do You Need a Medical Certificate for One Day Off Work?
Even a single sick day can involve an evidence request. Here is what to check with your workplace, how a one-day certificate works, and what MyMedicalCert can assess today.

Can an employer ask for evidence for one day?
Yes. Fair Work explains that an employer can request evidence for an absence of one day or less. Medical certificates and statutory declarations are examples of evidence; requests must be reasonable in the circumstances. An award or registered agreement may set evidence requirements.
Tell your employer as soon as possible that you need leave and how long you expect to be away. Ask what evidence is required rather than assuming a single day needs none. If you are asked for evidence and do not provide it, your entitlement to paid leave may be affected.

What does a one-day medical certificate cover?
A one-day certificate relates to a specified day of absence. Check the date and purpose on any document you receive before forwarding it to your workplace. A certificate for today should not be assumed to cover yesterday or a further day tomorrow.
There is also a difference between one-day coverage and same-day delivery. Coverage describes the absence documented. Delivery describes when the provider sends the result. A fast application process does not guarantee that a certificate will be approved or arrive by a particular time.
What should you check before applying?
Use these questions to avoid selecting a service that does not meet your needs:
- Which date do I need? Write down the actual date you are absent. If it is not today, MyMedicalCert’s current service will not cover it.
- Which leave type applies? Is the request for your own illness, or because you need to care for someone else? See our guide to sick leave and carer’s leave.
- Who needs to issue the certificate? Check whether your workplace needs a doctor-issued document or accepts pharmacist-issued evidence.
- What am I paying for? Read the assessment fee, eligibility conditions and approval process before paying.
- Do I need medical care as well? A certificate request should not replace a consultation about symptoms that need assessment or treatment.

Can I request a one-day medical certificate online?
MyMedicalCert offers online pharmacist assessments for adults who live and work in Australia. The current assessment fee is $12.99 AUD, and the service covers today only. A one-day certificate is sent by email if the pharmacist approves the request.
Payment does not guarantee a certificate. Complete the application accurately and read its eligibility questions before proceeding. You can choose a sick leave assessment or a carer’s leave assessment, depending on your circumstances.
Our certificates are pharmacist-issued. If you need a doctor’s certificate, read the doctor versus pharmacist guide before choosing a provider. You can also use our visit a pharmacy guide to prepare for an in-person enquiry.
What if I need yesterday, tomorrow or more than one day?
MyMedicalCert’s current service does not provide backdated, future-dated or multi-day certificates. Do not select today if you actually need a different date. Contact an appropriate healthcare provider, explain the dates and circumstances honestly, and ask what they can assess. Issuing any certificate remains the provider’s decision.
If your absence continues, update your workplace and seek suitable care. A second application is not a way to extend an existing certificate: MyMedicalCert requires at least 14 days between applications. Check the current service details and pricing before making a request.
After you receive the outcome
If a certificate is issued, check your name and the date, save the original email and follow your workplace’s process for providing evidence. Contact MyMedicalCert support if there is a problem with the document rather than editing it yourself.
An employer that needs to confirm a MyMedicalCert document can use our certificate verification request. If a request is not approved, follow any guidance supplied with the outcome and consider which other provider or evidence option meets your circumstances.
Ready to check your eligibility?
If you need evidence for today and a pharmacist assessment is suitable, request an online assessment. Read the service limits before paying, particularly if you need a doctor-issued document or coverage for another date.
